Consciousness, Intelligence, and Mitochondria

Where does “consciousness” live?  The brain?  The pineal gland?  It is now looking like consciousness and intelligence are deeply tied to small organelles in cells called mitochondria.

We tend to think of ourselves as a “whole”.  It seems to me my consciousness lives around my head, so explanations that involve the head, brain, or pineal seem to make sense.  But let’s dive deeper.  What is “the brain”?.  Our “brain” is just a logical and orderly collection of cells called astrocytes.  Inside each of these astrocytes is a mitochondria or many mitochondria depending on the state and sub-function of the astrocyte.  These cells work together to form a functional brain.  These independent cells will communicate and work together to perform functions, but they are independent cells capable of their own actions, immune responses, and other independent functions.

A paper entitled “The Spark of Life and the Unification of Intelligence, Health, and Aging” indicates that “General intelligence (g) represents the factors that influence performance across all academic and cognitive domains. The search for these factors has been ongoing for more than a century and has focused on the brain and cognitive systems that support learning and problem solving. In recent decades, it has become clear that the factors that influence academic and cognitive performance extend to general health and to successful aging in adulthood. The implication is that there may be one or several fundamental processes that influence the functioning of all biological systems, not simply the brain. The functioning of mitochondria is well situated as one of the processes that might unify intelligence, health, and aging. These organelles are located within cells and are the primary producers of cellular energy, among other functions. Energy availability, in turn, is the lowest common denominator needed for the development, maintenance, and optimal functioning of all biological systems. Here, I review the relations among intelligence, health, and aging and outline how the efficiency of mitochondrial functioning can link them together.”

Previously, mitochondria have been thought of as the ‘powerhouse of the cell,’ more like an engine. The study represents a ‘theoretical shift’ in how mitochondria are understood to facilitate future discoveries across scientific disciplines.  The study indicates that “intelligence” and “consciousness” are tied more to the mitochondrial organelles inside cells than they are to the brain itself.

Well that is REALLY COOL!  At GnuPharma we are re-mapping human function under the endocannabinoid system.  Guess what I just wrapped up?  You got it, a deep dive on mitochondrial functions and how they relate to our larger model and endocannabinoid functions.

What we have found is that mitochondria are configurable around DIET and ENVIRONMENT.  This is great news because as we learn more, we will learn better ways to optimize the performance of mitochondria, create more of them, and functionally access and optimize mitochondria using safe Natural processes.

Another new study indicates that mitochondria will indeed express a CB1 receptor on their outer membrane for endocannabinoid control and signaling.  In the very near future, we will be able to optimize the performance of these mitochondria by defining an optimal diet and environment.  Logic would indicate this would result in longer life, healthier life, a higher state of consciousness, more intelligence, and many other benefits.

We work through four major system, a fat system, a control system called the endocannabinoid system, a backup system called the microbiome, and a spiritual system which is looking to be deeply connected to our mitochondria.

THCa Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid

Current research indicates that the Endocannabinoid System is our master regulatory system.  As such it is a “master” system in our bodies and actually sits above another “master” system we all know about called the central nervous system.  Most of the benefits of cannabis come from its abilities to modulate the Endocannabinoid System and thereby have actions on the central nervous system system.  Some finer benefits, sometimes called “the entourage effects”, are caused by medicinal terpenes which further affect the central nervous system.  A cannabis strain containing linalool will be downregulating partially because of the affects of linalool on the central nervous system.

So what about THC-A?  THC-A is the “acidic” form of THC and is non-psychoactive, which means it won’t get you high.  This is the NATURAL form of THC.  When you smoke cannabis, or process it, you “de-carb” it using heat or pressure.  This knocks off the -A and creates THC which is NON acidic and also is the psychoactive part of cannabis.  Eating raw leaves of any cannabis plant will result in NO psychoactivity, but a plentiful dose of THC-A.

THC-A also has a unique property that is very powerful.  In addition to doing almost everything that THC can do, but get you high, it also affects another “master” system called our peroxisome system.  This system is our repair and waste system in nucleated cells.  THC-A affects the peroxisome system in a way that helps reset our immunity.

If you are suffering from an auto-immune situation, or are just wanting to reset after a health situation, THC-A is an excellent way to reset.

TrueMedX Plus THCa Tablets

When THC is produced in the cannabis plant it is produced as an acid called THC-A.  When you smoke cannabis you decarboxylate it, which means the heat removes the acid and the THC remains.  THC-A can also be decarboxylated using an oven and this is done to “active” distillates.  THC-A is non-psychoactive but has incredible health properties.  In fact THC-A affects one of our oldest neuroreceptors called PPAR.  In particular THC-A modulates PPAR-gamma.  PPAR gamma assists with: fatty acid metabolism, glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity (helps w/T2 diabetes, etc), immune balance, and inflammation.

Focus For Autism, But I’m Not Autistic?

Truemedx Line Of Focus Products

Truemedx has formulated some seriously powerful natural medicine. The Focus line of products are formulated to target the severly disregulated Endocannabinoid System of Autistic people. The formulators at Truemedx have discovered an ancient disregulation in people with Autism that needs to be addressed using much more basic resources like Fats!

Truemedx Focus Tablets

Even though I consume my fair share of cannabinoids throughout the day, I was still feeling anxious and depressed.  When Truemedx first came out with their line of Focus products I was immediately hooked on the Focus Tincture. I saw the benefits of taking a high CBG & CBD tincture that was formulated in Hemp Oil. I have always struggled with anxiety and depression. Therefor I am always eager to get my hands on quality natural medicine. To me, the focus products were just that, very high quality natural medicine. I was drawn to the research and how Truemedx goes about creating their products. I could see, and feel from the products, Truemedx is on to something.

As the research progressed it became very clear that the answer wasn’t more cannabinoids. It was actually more healthy fats! What we discovered is when humans are denied these fats they begin to break down. Humans will start breaking down in their gut and in their cognitive abilities. We need to be eating a balanced 1:1 diet of Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids. Currently we are at about 1:20. For every 1 Omega 3 we eat, we eat about 20 Omega 6’s. There are other Fatty Acids we need such as polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats.

Healthy Fats

The Focus tablets contain no cannabinoids, only fats we need to function properly. Ideally I would be getting these from the food I eat but my diet isnt all that great. The focus tablets provide the resources I need that I cant get from cannabis and have a really hard time getting in the common western diet. Since I started using the focus tablets I have seen a dramatic increase in energy, over-all mood has greatly improved, and I can focus better for longer. I dont notice the increase in Focus unless I am reading, working on the computer or studying. Surprise! You actually have to try and focus to notice the increase in focus!

Focus For You

Truemedx Focus Products work without any cannabinoids because resources are provided at a very high level. These specific resources support the function of our Endocannabinoid System so we can break down and use cannabinoids more efficiently. If you are finding that your current CBD or natural product regimen isn’t working please contact us. We will consult with you to help discover what products will work the best for you. Often we find that it is the additional herbs and fruit oils that give us the natural benefits over other products.

Metabolism & Autism

Because autism is a very complex disease, it requires the autistic individual to “evolve” in order to survive.  Without the capacity to build anti-inflammatories from fatty acids, the autistic individual is forced to adapt through changes in the production of short chain fatty acids in the gut which help with inflammation.  While this change saves their lives, it also contributes to the symptoms of autism.

Autism is a very complicated and complex set of disorders that stem from needed genetic expressions being turned off, needed genetic expressions being improperly encoded, or unneeded genetic expressions improperly turned on.  By virtue of these improper genetic expressions, the autistic individual’s body, from metabolism to the highest functions, has to adapt to survive.

The human body is a very delicate thing, but also a very resilient thing.  Every time you eat, you change your genetic expression.  If you walk over a lead mine, your genetic expression will change and adapt.  If you are a cigarette smoker, your genetic expressions will change.  If you have allergies, your genetic expression will change.

How we “metabolize” what we eat is also a very big part of this picture and is determined by diet and by environment.  For instance, athletes will crave sugars and carbohydrates as those provide “quick energy” for athletic endeavors.  Someone who lives in a cold climate will crave fatty foods.  We pay very little attention to this now, but we really should start paying more attention.  Consider this…

A group of humans lives in a jungle abundant with fruits but has very little proteins or sources of fats.  If all those humans ate were fruits, they would be well satisfied.  However, every time they ate fatty acids, their bodies would want to store that precious commodity for future use.  There would be very little need to use a stored fatty acid and most of the bodily processes are running on the fruits=sugars as fuels.  So the body stores the fatty acids and these human would get obese in abundance.

Well, guess what?  Check out the food labels of the things you eat.  Sugar, carbo’s, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, sugar, sugar, sugar.  We are getting fat in abundance and it is killing us.  Further, what ails most of us due to the above is exactly what ails someone affiliated with autism.  In fact, autistic people have alot of trouble just processing fatty acids.  There are several reasons for this and all are addressed by the Focus Metabolic Powder.

In a way, autism is an evolution.  It is a chain reaction of circumstances that happen within the body in order to save that person’s life.  Interestingly, many other “genetic” and neurodegenerative diseases may be linked back to diet, environment, and the resulting genetics changes.A

THC Tablets Change The Game

The ECS shop in Owasso, OK has been producing what they call The SQ788 THC Tablet in two different variations “Sativa” and “Indica”. The Sativa blend contains 20mg of THC per tablet in addition to herbs and other cannabinoids that are blended together in a specific way to provide an uplifting and euphoric effect. The Indica blend also contains 20mg of THC in addition to herbs and other cannabinoids blended together in a way to provide a down-regulating effect to the Endocannabinoid System. This means that these will melt away any stress and anxiety as you relax on the couch. SQ 788 name pays homage to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Law “State Question 788”.

Tablets are starting to rise in popularity and thats why we felt the need to produce a high quality consistent tablet to pay back the people of Oklahoma for making this industry possible. Tablets are the best form of edible THC for any medical patient because they are consistent and healthier.

Consistency is something that typically lacks in the Medical Marijuana Industry, especially when it comes to edibles. Edibles widely vary in strengths, sizes, production methods, etc. A tablet offers consistent dosing and very reliable dosing. Tablets also offer a more reliable onset time and duration of effect. Once you have taken them once you can be sure they will affect you the same every time, given you take the same dose.

For a Medical Industry there is a whole lot of sugar, carbs, and fats in almost every edible on the shelf in every dispensary. If you are a patient looking for something healthy that has low THC then you do not have many options. A lot of 10mg products are candies. The SQ 788 THC tablets contains only botanicals, THC, and excipients. Excipients are an inactive substance that help the tablets bind together.

Right now the Medical Marijuana industry is like the early days of pharmaceutical medicine. Most of the medicinal products are syrups, tinctures, powders, and smokeables. This is similar to a pharmacy in the mid to late 1800’s….. before Bayer introduced Aspirin. The active ingredient in Aspirin is extracted and synthesized from willow bark. Willow bark was being used medicinally as a fever reducer and pain reliever as early as 3000 – 1500BC in ancient Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations. After years of being a natural medicine in 1897 Bayer patents the process to create Aspirin. “A” meaning acetyl, “spir” is derived from Spirae Ulmeria (meadow sweet), also a source of  and “IN” was a common suffix for meds. In 1899 Aspirin started being widely produced and for the next 100 years has been known as a wonder drug.

The SQ788 THC Tablet and other tablets produced by The ECS shop could be just as disruptive to the Medical Marijuana Market and just as beneficial to the Medical Marijuana Patient as Aspirin was to the pharmaceutical industry. The medicinal effects combined with the consistent dosing and the consistent onset/duration make this an easy buy for any Medical Patient.

Owasso Oklahoma Welcomes the First and Only Consultive & Compounding Dispensary

As marijuana continues to make an impact on the health of Oklahomans, a group of industry leaders is  coming together to develop a unique new dispensary concept called The ECS Shop. The group will open  their “proof of concept” store in Owasso, Oklahoma on April 10th, 2021. The dispensary will be located at  7726 North Owasso Expressway in Owasso.

“Our group has a considerable amount of expertise on the science around medical cannabis, around  education about medical cannabis, about delivering quality patient service, and high quality construction  services” said Chip Paul.

Patient care and patient service will be the focus of the dispensary concept. “We will have something for  every patient including natural products formulations, CBD formulations, and THC formulations. We will also  do patient consultations and help with the harder cases” said Cynthia Paul.

Hawkeye consulting has already been providing services for patients across the state and will join the Paul’s  in this new concept. “We love our patients and we will ensure that our patients are properly handled by the  OMMA. In fact, we really want to manage the entire patient licensing process for a patient.” said Jennifer  Hawkins, CEO of Hawkeye Consulting.

The combination of special patient formulations, education, and patient services will be how the group  differentiates itself from other dispensaries. “We will be something between a health clinical and a typical  dispensary. We want ANYONE to feel comfortable walking into our concept.” said Kent Hawkins, President of  Hawkeye Consulting.

The group already has trained several physicians which they will utilize when providing patient registrations  and recommendations. “As a physician who speaks with many people daily about the ailments that they  wish to address with medical cannabis, it’s imperative that more education on this topic is out there, both in  dispensaries and physician exam rooms, so that people suffering from their medical conditions, oftentimes  which are very debilitating, can maximize the beneficial properties of the cannabis plant.” said Laren  Hightower, DO.

The group can be contacted via email at or via phone at 918-949-6699.

Terpenes To Treat Major Depression, Anxiety

Major Depression & Anxiety – GABA Channel

“Terpene rich plants are truly nature’s medicine cabinet”

My last blog dove into the effects CBG can have on Opiate withdrawal and how it could potentially be a better alternative to Clonidine for treating withdrawal symptoms. This week I am excited to be talking about Terpenes and how they can treat or at least mitigate Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, sleep irregularities, and cognitive deficit symptoms. I will get into specific terps and how they can help in a different paragraph, right now I want you to understand where the mentioned disease states start.

Your Gaba Channel is responsible for your flight or fight response, when this channel is dysregulated we start to see people with General Anxiety Disorder, Bi-polar Disorder, and depression. This would make sense because imagine if you are in a stressful situation your body is going to naturally react to try and protect you. If we are dysregulated in this channel we would feel major anxiety at the wrong times, or maybe be over reacting to small everyday stressors that it seems most people can handle with ease. This is not because our Gaba Channel is OVER-active it is because it is UNDER-active, in addition to being underactive there could additionally be alterations in the principal receptors Gaba-A.

What is the most common treatment for someone who sees their Doc with these issues? Typically you are prescribed an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) these affect your 5htp1-a receptor responsible for Serotonin Production. We will also assume you are prescribed a Benzodiazepine as well. Benzos such as Xanax, Klonopin, and Ativan go directly at your Gaba Channel by “turning it on, and letting it run”

When we take a benzo we allow our Gaba channel to open up and function at max capacity. This allows us to feel relaxed, lowers our inhibition, and really relaxes the Central Nervous System. Hence why mixed with alcohol or other drugs this can be very dangerous.  Since Gaba has action on the Central Nervous System this is where we feel the perceived high from the drug. The problem with Benzos is that when you stop taking them your problems are only going to get worse. You can count on no sleep, severe depression and anxiety, and possible seizures. Why not take something that goes at the same Gaba Channel that is natural? Why not take something that will help regulate this issue naturally rather than just putting a band-aid on it. WE ARE NOT BROKEN, WE LACK RESOURCES. Now, read that one more time.

Terpenes are found in all plants; it is the compound that gives plants their pretty smell and color. Different Terpenes are abundantly rich in Cannabis Plants. There are currently around 10,000 different terps around the world and over 200 have been discovered in Cannabis alone. Terpene rich plants are produced when they are grown under stressful conditions. The plant produces Terpenes to help ward off Fungus, mold, pests, and any other foreign invaders. “ The best Lavender in the world is grown in Provence, France. Where they have poor, rocky soil.” Says Ethan Russo (discover Magazine)

Terpenes That Help Lower Anxiety

Linalool is the most abundant Terpene in Lavender and is found throughout most strains of Cannabis. “ In Vivo studies on animal models have verified the anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects of certain essential oils and the interactions of their major components with central nervous system receptors.” ( The modulation of GABA Neurotransmitter systems are the major mechanisms responsible for sedative, anxiolytic, and anticonvulsant properties. The terpenes that are most popular for their anti-anxiety effect are Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, and Limonene. All of these modulate GABA to produce anti-anxiety effects and relax the Central Nervous System.

EOs have drawn attention from scientists, practitioners, and therapists for their biological effects such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and antinociceptive properties (Hüsnü Can Başer & Buchbauer, 2016). Human and animal studies have shown that several EOs produce diverse pharmacological responses in the nervous system resulting in anxiolytic, analgesic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant and sedative effects. Therefore, it has been suggested that EOs could be effective for mitigating the symptoms of various mental illnesses including depression, anxiety and dementia. I implore you to do your own research on NIH.Gov and search “terpenes” and “GABA”!

You have natural options out there, don’t be afraid to try something different! My hope for you as a reader is to change the way you think about consuming cannabis and herbs. If our Budtenders were properly trained, every patient would have this info and be able to know what terps they need to help their condition.

Giving Your Coffee A Medicinal Boost

Giving Your Coffee A Medicinal Boost

Nothing Touches The Soul Quite Like Cannabis and Coffee

The Current State of Coffee and Cannabis

If you are like me, Coffee is an essential part of my every morning routine. When I have a cup that smells of pure bitter, fruity, perfection I know it’s going to be a great day. I am somewhat of a Coffee whore you could say. I never stick to one bag for too long, always jumping from bean to bean to see which kind of coffee really hits the spot. I’ve had cups of coffee that give me a tweaky feeling and I’ve also had cups that seem to make me feel even more tired. My preference lies somewhere in the middle. The only downside to my love of coffee is the way it makes my tummy feel. This being said, I have had stomach issues my whole life and I usually take a CBD tincture in the morning for the pain and uncomfortable feeling I have when I wake up. Now, I know what you’re thinking, this person is going to tell me to just drop my tincture in my coffee and call it good. NO!

I’ve tried this and all it did was make my coffee taste “herbal” and it weakens the strength of the tincture by putting it in more liquid. If you are in a pinch, or in a hurry, this may be your only option but its definitely not the best option, in my opinion. I just don’t feel right putting a $100 tincture into my coffee.

I know you have also seen “ CBD infused coffee”. This was something that I was stoked to get! I didn’t even mind paying $50 for the bag. ( double the price of most coffee I buy ) Let me tell you I have never been so disappointed in my life in a cup of coffee. This Peruvian CBD blend of coffee tasted of water and dirt. Shame on the lady who sold this to me. This was the last straw, I had to figure out a way to get some dang cannabinoids in my coffee. This had become a personal mission of mine.

Dalgona Coffee & Cannabinoids

It’s Magic

One day I came home from work and my significant other was watching a cooking show, and I had just picked up a syringe of 1:1 CBD:THC distillate for $40. During this cooking show the lady started talking about Dalgona Coffee. That’s when I knew this was going to be the perfect way to combine cannabinoids and coffee.

Dalgona Coffee is only 3 ingredients: Sugar, Instant Coffee Crystals, and Hot water. Put these 3 ingredients in a bowl and use a mixer to start to mix. Once you can tell the mixture is starting to firm up add in your desired amount of CBD or THC distillate and allow the mixer to mix in the distillate to the frothy coffee goodness.

Your end product will be a thick, frothy, coffee like Mousse. Now all you do is add your mixture to a cup of milk, stir, and enjoy!

I have found this to be the best way because I can very accurately dose my cup and the mixture is so sweet and bitter it totally covers up the taste of the distillate. I will put a link to a recipe for Dalgona Coffee below.

CBG Tops Clonidine for Opiate Withdrawal

Volume 1

CBG Tops Clonidine for Opiate Withdrawal

If you’ve never experienced Opiate withdrawal thank God you don’t know Hell”

Opiate Withdrawal

If you know the feeling, then I’m sorry to make you uncomfortable by having to explain it. My experience with opiates was through addiction, but whether you were prescribed or not the feeling is the same when that chemical starts to leave your body. I remember feeling a rush of anxiety followed by a big yawn and watery eyes. That’s when I knew it was on, most people will explain to you that it is like having the flu. Which it is, all the symptoms are exactly the same, only 100x worse. The body aches are so bad you want to shake your own legs off. Sleep doesn’t come and expect to have a six pack from dry heaving so much. Why do we feel this way when we abruptly stop taking opiates? Well, our brain has been accustomed to functioning with opiates and when we stop giving our brain this chemical it has to rely on natural functions again to produce Dopamine, Serotonin, and regulate Norepinephrine.

Now I know there is a lot more that goes into drug addiction and withdrawal than these few things but most of the pain of withdrawal that someone experiences are from a lack of Dopamine and Serotonin, and an over production of Norepinephrine. This happens because our brains can’t function regularly, there is a dis-regulation.

Clonidine Prescribed for Opiate Withdrawal

Clonidine is the main drug that is prescribed to people who are going through Opiate withdrawal. Clonidine is primarily used as a blood pressure medication but has been shown to reduce the symptoms associated with withdrawal. It suppresses anxiety, agitation, flu like symptoms, cramps, and sweating. That almost covers all the withdrawal symptoms, but why does this non-opiate work at reducing symptoms? Clonidine works by binding to your Alpha – 2 Adrenergic receptor , this receptor is responsible for the output of Norepinephrine and regulating blood pressure. So when we take Clonidine we agonize the A-2 receptor which helps lower blood pressure, decongestion, and regulate body temperature.

Did you know CBG has very high binding affinity to your Alpha-2 Adrenergic receptor?

Ditching Clonidine for CBG

I know what you’re thinking… how could something from cannabis possibly work better than a pharma drug?! (Sarcasm) Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of the first cannabinoids formed in the maturation of a cannabis plant. CBGA is formed when Olivetic Acid and geranyl-pyrophosphate combine. Then through the process of decarboxylation or the plant maturing in the sun, the Acid falls off and we are left with CBG.
CBG work to combat the symptoms of withdrawal the exact same way Clonidine does! Since CBG is also a Alpha-2 Agonist it helps to slow the production of Norepinephrine. With the help of CBG we should see withdrawal symptoms such as muscle aches, runny nose, cramps, and hot/cold start to subside. CBG also has another bonus medicinal benefit, it has binding affinity at your 5HT1A Receptor. This receptor is responsible for the production of serotonin. Therefor we can assume CBG will also help with additional withdrawal symptoms of nausea/vomiting, sleeplessness, and depression.
